Week 4

The Aggies host the Florida Gators this Thursday night in one of the most anticipated and celebrated women’s college soccer games of the year!  Florida are the preseason favorites to win the SEC and the Aggies were picked 2nd in the preseason coaches’ poll.  The match kicks off at 6pm and can be seen on live national television (SEC Network – check your local listings)!  Then, on Sunday we are back on National TV (ESPNU) for our game in Columbia, MO vs the Mizzou Tigers.

Thursday’s match is Howdy World Night at Ellis Field. Admission for all Texas A&M international students and students is FREE.  If you don’t have a sports pass you can get in for $3 by wearing their Greek chapter letters. The first 100 fans will receive a free Texas A&M flag. The match will also feature a pregame performance by “Ballet Folklorico Celestial TAMU and a TAMU International Student Association member recognition at halftime.

Hot dogs are just $1 at Ellis Field on Thursday.

These are two familiar foes.  We have played the Gators a dozen times and the Tigers more than 2 dozen times.  But the relationships the A&M coaches have with the Florida and Missouri coaches goes back decades as teammates and colleagues.

College Teammates

Did you know that Florida head coach Becky Burleigh and Texas A&M assistant coach Lori Stephenson were college teammates at Methodist College?  Both played for legendary coach Joe Pereira.  Lori was an All American defender when Becky was the team’s goalkeeper.  Lori was  inducted into the Methodist College Athletic hall of Fame last fall!  And, Aggie Associate head coach Phil Stephenson is a former head coach at Methodist.

Phil, Becky, myself, as well as Florida assistants Alan Kirkup and Vic Campbell all worked together on the USA Region III ODP staff in the 90s.

Did you know that Missouri Head coach Bryan Blitz and I are former teammates and fraternity brothers at the University of Tulsa?  We played together in 1984 and then I coached Bryan in 1985, when I was assistant coach at TU.

So, even though you won’t see either staff have their team take it easy on us this Thursday or Sunday, you will surely notice the friendships and admiration we have for one another.

The 12 matches are the most for the Aggies against the old guard of the SEC, trailing only 23 contests the Maroon and White played against former Big 12 foe Missouri. The teams didn’t meet on the pitch in 2016. The squads played twice in 2015 with Texas A&M winning 2-1 in the regular-season and Florida besting the Aggies in the SEC Tournament championship game, 2-1.

The Aggies are 15-5-3 all-time against Missouri with the 23 meetings the most for the Aggies against an SEC foe. The last two meetings ended in 1-1 draws. In the 2015 season finale, Texas A&M snuffed out the Tigers’ chance to earn a share of the SEC regular-season title when Danielle Rice saved a PK in overtime. The teams met every season from 1996-2013..

Back to Winning Ways

I am proud of our players and excited about getting back on the field this week.  Our team has already won some impressive matches and has been fun to watch.  We have created so many scoring chances and dominated the stats of every match this season; outshooting our opponents by a nearly 3-1 margin.  As the season rolls on and we get our players more onto the same tempo and rhythm, we will be scoring even more goals and winning big matches.

Thanks and Gig ‘em!
